Warning - gratuitous pie

I like to take a multicultural approach to life, especially when it adds extra opportunities for cramming dessert in my face. As it turns out, yesterday was Pi day (March 14, or 3.14 if you are American. Geddit?). It would have been rude not to mark this important date in some way - I would hate to accidentally insult any nationality, particularly one that I live with.

Of course, this desire to make pie had nothing at all to do with this recipe that I happened to find the other day while looking for the perfect chocolate cake (that search is still ongoing, so any suggestions would be welcome). For the love of all that is good and holy - a chocolate pie. Pie. With chocolate. And pie. It is seriously, deliciously creamy, and not heavy at all. It is, however, extremely rich, so small(ish) slices are the order of the day.

Now let's gloss over the fact that I had a slice for breakfast and pretend that walking the dog later will burn off all the extra calories, shall we?

  3. Pie is never gratuitous. Never!

I swear By Nigella Lawson's Chocolate Fudge Cake in Nigella Bites. It is so chocolaty, not overly sweet (even the lush icing) and makes a good sized cake. I only usually make it for special occasions as it takes a s**tload of cocoa and chocolate but it is worth every last gram.

  4. I think it's okay because chocolate is a major food group.

  8. But then after the walk, you'll be hungry again . . . so won't that require more pie? I definitely think so.

Here is my family recipie for chocolate cake - it always gets good reviews, especially when I add coffee to the icing. It is super easy (as easy as pie, even)

    2c sugar
    1 2/4 flour
    1 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp baking soda
    3/4 c coaco
    2 eggs
    1 c sour milk
    1 c strong coffee
    1/2 c oil
    1 tsp vanilla

Mix dry ingredients. Add wet ingredients. Beat for 2 min. Place in greased pan and bake at 350 degrees for 35 - 40 min.

  9. Pie for breakfast ? I don't see a problem :)

My favorite chocolate cake is this one : http://www.kraftrecipes.com/recipes/bakers-one-bowl-chocolate-54534.aspx

It's the cake my mom made for my 1st birthday and when I want chocolate cake, it is still the one I make.

  11. oh! Yum! Cake is a perfectly acceptable food group, I'm sure of it ;) My favourite chocoalte cake is from the Primrose Bakery cook book - has cocoa and melted dark chocolate in it....can never have too much chocolate :) It's a bit of a faff to make (you to have to seperate the eggs, whisk the whites etc) but totally worth the effort!

  17. Nothing wrong with Pi for breakfast, especially not on Pi day. Besides, it has all kinds of goodness from important food groups:
    Dairy
    Grain
    Egg
    Chocolate :)

    All good!

  19. Now I want to make pie!
My go to chocolate pie recipe is:

1/2 bag chocolate chips melted in the microwave with 1 tbls water and stirred until smooth
1 package softened cream cheese (8oz, I think)
mix the chocolate chips and cream cheese together until smooth
    then stir in
1 cup cream, that you have beaten into whipped cream
put into a pre-baked crust or graham cracker crust and eat - or refrigerate for awhile and then eat.

It is fun to try with different types of chocolate chips - I love it with mint chips.
My favorite part about Thanksgiving is eating pie the next morning for breakfast! :)
