Welcome to the pervalong!*

*does not involve actual pervs. Sorry to disappoint you.

Hellooooo! I'm a little bit excited (and also scared) to launch the pervalong today. Please go ahead and grab a button from the sidebar and join the flickr group too, if you like.

Here is the (hopefully sufficiently relaxed) schedule:

September 17: Choosing your colour scheme
September 24: Preparing your foundation papers
October 1: Piecing central blocks A and B
October 8: Piecing central blocks C and D
October 15: Border 1
October 22: Border 2 and finishing your quilt top

November 5: Linky party to show off your finished tops/quilts. The link will stay open for a week, so there is loads of time to enter! There may be a prize for a randomly selected finished top/quilt, just sayin'.

Colour scheme

The basic principle for choosing your fabrics is to start with a strong colour in the centre (I used Papaya – a lovely warm yellow) and fade gradually through to paler colours (corn yellow, canary and maize) via a bridging colour (ash) and then into increasingly dark shades of a second colour (iron, steel, charcoal, pepper and black):

This principle can obviously be applied to any colour scheme. I’m going to make my second quilt in aqua and green:

A colour card is really really helpful when you are dealing with dicey colour reproduction on computer screens. As an example, jade green looks completely wrong on screen but it’s actually just right. If you don’t have a colour card but want to use a different colour scheme then just ask and I will see what I can do to help.

I was toying with the idea of using pink as the feature colour. I really like it, but in the end decided to go with something completely different.

And for all of you rainbow addicts (you know who you are), here is a rainbow option. Again, the colours are much better in real life:
By marvellous coincidence, Annie at The Village Haberdashery has all of these colourways already picked out for you here, with a fab 10% discount (use the code "PERVALONG" when you checkout, valid until the end of Sunday 23rd). The bundles include all the fabric you need to make your quilt top and binding (7 fat quarters, 2 half metres and one 3/4 metre)You will also need 1 metre (or 1 1/8 yards) of your choice for backing .

It's two weeks before we start sewing, so you have looooooads of time to get your fabrics ready. Have fun choosing, and please ask if you would like me to have a squizz at my colour card for you.

Looking forward to having you perv along with me!

  11. HiCharlotte, it's the first time I've done anything like this so excited as well as a little nervous! I was wondering if you could check your colour card for me just to see that the colours I'm thinking about using will all blend OK?
    Here they are:
    Papaya
    Corn Yellow
    Daffodil
    Maize
    Ash
    Lupine
    Plum
    Magenta
    Berry
    Eggplant

    Many thanks

    Hannah

    1. Hi Hannah!
I've checked my card, and Lupine and magenta are purpley purples, while the others are pinkish. Two alternatives are to use rose, plum, berry, eggplant and raisin, or rose, plum, cerise, berry and eggplant. These are all warm colours. The first option ends quite dark and the second less so. Rose, plum and cerise are on the pink side (although dusky pink) but blend really nicely into the other colours. If you prefer more purpley purples, then lilac, wisteria, magenta, tulip and eggplant would be a good option. I hope that helps!

  15. Hey Charlotte! I'd love to do this! Which fabrics do we need 1/2 meter and 3/4 meters of?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dorrie!!!! How cool! You need 7 FQs (the first 7 colours in your quilt, from the centre outwards), 1/2 a yard of the next two, and then 3/4 of a yard of the last one (this includes a 1/4 yard for binding). Hope that helps!

  16. Hi Charlotte,
I'd love to join. Firstly though , before I choose my fabrics, what is the finished size of the quilt? If I wanted to make it bigger (cos it only looks about a metre squared), what would you suggest> Bigger blocks or just make the surround larger>

    1. I wondered about the same thing. :-)
And if it is possible to do it as english paper piecing?
I decided to go for the original colourway :-)

    3. So far I have 5 out of 10 :( the local store here in the US was limted on Kona Cotton...but what I did shades of yellow tan to brown. instead of yellow to gray to black.

      so far I have

      Corn Yellow
      Buttercup yellow
      Bone
      Chocolate Brown
      Expresso

I have to figure out how to finish the rest. It is hard since internet color can be off what you really have.

  25. I LOVE this quilt! I want to make one, but was thinking of making a bigger quilt. Would it be easy to "double" everything, or just enlarge it by 2? Can I just double the amount of fabric I need? So cool!!

  26. Aghhh ...... I can't resist any longer! I now have all my fabrics but one (retailers in Australia don't seem to be big on stocking solids :( let along shades of grey. I will post a pic of my fabrics in the flickr group soon :o)

  27. I love your quilt design! I was thinking of going with purple and aqua. Could you recommend 4 purples that will go with the aqua colorway you used? I like tulip, wisteria, lupine and lilac (or thistle?)...Thanks!!

    1. Hi Meghan! I'll take a look at my colour card in daylight tomorrow and get back to you!

    2. Hello again! I've taken a look, and lupine doesn't really fit with the others. A better bet is tulip, wisteria, thistle and orchid. Hope that helps!

  28. Ooh can you link up the posts? This looks fascinating. I know it's finished ...

  29. Hi, can you tell me which colors need the larger amounts of material? I assume that the outer most color (black on the top color way) needs the most, but are charcoal and steel the ones that need more than a FQ? Thanks!
